Dedicated on April 15, 1928, Chain of Craters Road was built to the rim of Makaopuhi Crater. By 1965, it reached all the way to Kalapana on the coast. Since then, the highway has been inundated by a series of lava flows that have caused closures, realignments, and abandoned remnants all along its path. Today, Chain of Craters Road grants access to stunning views, ancient petroglyphs, and Holei Sea Arch on the coast.
