Naupaka Kahakai & Kuahiwi (Coastal & Mountain Naupaka Species)
Naupaka Kahakai is a true pioneer plant naturalized throughout the Polynesian islands. Incredibly adapted to sea spray, high winds, and, sandy, rocky habitats, its seeds can float in salt water for over one year and still germinate.
The mountain species illustrated is endemic to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. There are 9 endemic species of scaevola in Hawaiʻi. They all display unique “half flowers” which are explained in a traditional Hawaiian folktale.
