Millions of years ago, the first ancestors of Hawaiiʻs forest birds found themselves on the most remote archipelago in the world. Blown by the storm winds or stranded in exhaustion, these arrivals found a way to survive in a new environment. Their descendants, acted upon by the forces of time and isolation, evolved to become the species we know today, found only in Hawaiʻi and intertwined with the ecology of Hawaiian forests.
Currently, climate change contributes to one of the biggest threats to survival of Hawaiʻi forest birds, as warmer temperatures higher on the mountains allow introduced mosquitos bearing exotic bird diseases to breed high in Hawaiian forests. Places like Haleakalā National Park safeguard the last best habitat for these birds.
