The ʻōhiʻa lehua tree grows from the sea level to about 8,000 feet in altitude, and can be shrubby or stately. Seeds are tiny and easily carried on the wind. It can sprout from a rock crack and is one of the first plants to colonize new lava flows. Other plants begin to grow in its shade. In spring it bears crimson, nectar-heavy blossoms.
