The chance to watch the sun rise or set from the summit of Haleakalā Volcano, with its rare silversword plants and Mars-like colors, draws enchanted visitors from all parts of the world. In pre-contact Hawaiʻi, the summit of the volcano was a sacred area set aside for aspiring navigators to learn the star patterns that guided open ocean voyaging.
