Preserved since 1961, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau offers a rare glimpse of ancient Hawaiʻi. Hale o Keawe Temple, The Great Wall (sanctuary), and the paena waʻa (canoe landing) are just a few features found at this sacred site. Canoes were highly treasured and an essential part of daily life for fishing, battles and transportation. Ancient Hawaiians were expert navigators, traveling within the island chain and throughout Polynesia.
